The Department of School Counseling offers programs and services to help each student achieve his or her best in school and prepare for future success. Counselors meet with students individually and in groups to help them with educational planning, vocational and career exploration, decision making, as well as, personal issues that affect school performance and future plans. They work with students to help them gain confidence and maintain a positive attitude towards their abilities and their future. Counselors also collaborate with other staff members on Freshman Transition Teams, Child Study Team meetings, and Planning and Placement Teams. FAFSA:  Free Application for Federal Student Aid

APPLICATION PROCESS BEGINS:  JANUARY 1ST

COST:  FREE                                      www.fafsa.ed.gov

The FAFSA, or FREE Application for Federal Student Aid, is a form that you must fill out in order to determine your eligibility for federal financial aid (including grants, loans, and work-study programs). States may award additional non-federal aid based on the information you submit in your FAFSA, and colleges and universities also use this information to decide what type of financial aid package they will award to you. January 1st is the first day that you may begin filling out a FAFSA. Each school has its own deadline for the FAFSA, so check with the schools you are applying to ahead of time. The FAFSA may be completed either online or with paper forms you mail in. Talk to your school counselor to request paper forms.

PIN NUMBER / What is a PIN?

A PIN is a 4-digit number that is used in combination with your Social Security Number, name, and date of birth to identify you as someone who has the right to access your own personal information on Federal Student Aid Web sites, such as FAFSA on the Web. If you are a parent and you want to electronically sign a FAFSA for your child, you need your own PIN. If you have more than one child attending college, you can use the same PIN to sign their applications.

FEE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/)

YOU must complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid to apply for federal student aid and to apply for most state and college aid.

YOU do not have to PAY to get help or submit your FAFSA. Submit your FAFSA for free online at www.fafsa.gov.  Federal aid provides free help online at www.fafsa.gov or you can call 1-800-433-3243 (1-800-4-Fed-Aid)

Federal Student Aid PIN
Your PIN can be used each year to electronically apply for federal student aid and to access your Federal Student Aid records online. If you receive a PIN, you agree not to share it with anyone. Your PIN serves as your electronic signature and provides access to your personal records, so you should never give your PIN to anyone, including commercial services that offer to help you complete your FAFSA. Be sure to keep your PIN in a safe place.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES

All students signing up for Advanced Placement courses next year will be required to pay the fee of $86 per exam. Students eligible for free or reduced lunch, or who have special financial circumstances, must see Dr. Phillips. No student will be denied access to AP testing because of inability to pay. Students who are signed up for courses that are only AP must take the AP test.

If a course is both UConn ECE and AP, the student may take the course for either UConn credit or AP, or both.

 UCONN EARLY COLLEGE EXPERIENCE COURSES

 UConn ECE  fees for 2012-13.

UConn ECE has been able to keep its student program fees at $25 per credit since 2006, with a 100% fee waiver for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. We are proud of our commitment to keep fees low (courses offered through UConn ECE are one-tenth the cost of those offered on-campus) and are continuing to make this a priority. However, we have been charged by the University to implement a University Resource Fee of $15 per course (three-credit courses will now be $90, four-credit courses will now be $115). The University Resource Fee will go directly to the University to off-set the cost of technology resources and student support services that are accessible to UConn ECE students and require a high-level of upkeep from the University.

The University Resource Fee will be reflected on the 2012 – 13 student registration forms.

REQUESTING TRANSCRIPTS

Dear Juniors and Seniors and their Parents /Guardians:

Please read the important information below regarding transcripts for colleges and scholarships. Montville High School is now using Naviance for processing of all transcripts. All transcripts must be requested through Naviance in the Transcripts section under My Colleges. Do not forget to click on Add Transcript Requests or Request Transcripts at the bottom of the page. Please do not request transcripts for colleges or scholarships unless you have actually applied. For scholarships, make sure you have all the information and forms ready before you request a transcript, because once the transcript is requested it will be given to the counselor to sign, and it will go out. Scholarships usually require everything to be sent together, so you must let your counselor know if you are applying for a scholarship that requires a transcript, and give the counselor the complete package. If you have sent out scholarship applications on your own, and they require a transcript, please check with your counselor to make sure one was sent out. Many colleges require mid-year reports. It is the student’s responsibility for requesting mid-year reports and to be aware of deadlines. If you have any questions, please contact your school counselor by email or at 848-1285.

HOW TO REQUEST TRANSCRIPT INFORMATION

FOR STUDENTS TAKING

·         University of Connecticut Early College Experience Classes (ECE) and

·         Three Rivers Community College & Career Pathways Program

If you’ve taken UConn ECE or Three Rivers CCP courses they will show up on your high school transcript but if you want those college credits to transfer to the college/university you will be attending next year you need to request the an official transcript from either UConn or Three Rivers.

Also, request that they forward to you a copy of the transcript so that you have it for your home records and future use.
